How to Play PS4 on Laptop Screen with HDMI | A Comprehensive Informative Guide
Considering how basic this feature seems, it should be a simple cable connection but it is a more tricky thing to do. Why? It’s because of how HDMI ports are made. HDMI is only uni-directional which means either your port will either be an Input Connection port or Output Connection port.
How to play PS4 on Laptop Screen?
We have established that connecting the HDMI cable directly with the laptop won’t work. So, here I have compiled 2 methods step by step that will allow you to connect and play PS4 games on the laptop screen seamlessly. Both of these methods require good local internet connectivity.
Video Capture Card
This method requires a video capture card. A Video Capture card helps connect your PS4 with any laptop connected to your home (similar) network. What it does is connects with your PS4 through HDMI cable, processes it, and transmits over the network. You may access it with software that comes with the device over your laptop.
Components you will require for this setup are:
- Laptop & PS4
- Video Capture Card
- HDMI Cable
- High-Speed Internet (WIFI or Ethernet)
The next main thing you will need is to activate this PS4 as your primary. The process for this is:
Open Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 > Activate
Now that we have this basic setting covered up, let’s jump into the setup steps.
Step 1: Connect your PS4 with an Internet connection, either through LAN cable or Wireless. The steps to connect to WiFi are: go to settings, from there visit Network Settings. After that, you will find Internet Connection Settings. From there you can find your router and connect to it. For this step, make sure that your PS4 and laptop are connected to the same network.
Step 2: You need a Video Capture Card to be able to connect your PS4 to a laptop. You can find a good Capture Card list here. They have mentioned multiple Capture cards you can choose from according to your requirements.
Step 3: Connect your Video Capture Card with your laptop via USB port. This will allow you to install the latest software of the device within your laptop. Install this software and open it up.
Step 4: Next step is to connect your PS4 with Video Capture Card using the HDMI cable. The capture card comes with an input connection port that allows your PS4 to communicate with it and through it to your laptop.
Step 5: The software we installed in step 3, if you have it opened good, otherwise open it up. With it, power up your PS4 if you haven’t already. The software will search for the PS4, if it doesn’t please ensure that both devices are connected at the same network, this will display it on the laptop screen.
With these simple steps, you will be able to configure your laptop to stream gameplay over your laptop. Since this method requires a local internet connection, that means it’s dependent gravely over your connection speed. The better the broadband connection you have the better the experience.
This setup lets you go cable-free, by using Sony’s official free Windows or MAC software over your laptop to connect with PS4. How does it work? It requires you to install Sony’s Remote Play by this link. After setup installation, you will need to connect both devices to your PS4 & laptop with the same internet connection. Once done, follow the following easy steps to configure it.
Components you require for Remote Play setup:
- Laptop & PS4
- High-Speed Internet Connection
- USB Cable
- An Account on PlayStation Network
Note: This setup, being cheap, requires you to have an LCD screen to tweak/change a few settings within your PS4, allowing it to stream seamlessly on your laptop. This will also allow your laptop to have more control over your PS4 including the display.
Step 1: Download Software. Go to the Sony remote play website and download the latest version available on the website for your respected operating system. Now, run the installer and follow simple installation steps to install it on your computer.
Step 2: Enable Primary Console Settings. This step is in case if you have 2 or more PS4 connected over the same network. You will need to set one of them as the Primary Console.
- To set a PS4 as your Primary Console. Turn on the PS4, navigate to Settings, next go to PlayStation Network settings, after that Account Management, now, you will see an option Activate as Primary PS4, enable it.
- It is also recommended to update your PS4 on the latest available software. To do that you can again visit Settings and then to System Software Update to download the latest software.
Step 3: Enable Remote Play Connection Settings. To do this, open Settings, scroll down to Remote Play Connection Settings, go ahead and open that up, now you will see Enable Remote Play if it isn’t enabled then enable it to activate remote play by checking the box. To allow you access to the games through your network using your laptop, the PS4 should be powered on or the Rest mode activated.
Step 4: Activate Rest Mode. To check if Rest mode is enabled. Go to Settings, scroll down until you see Power Save Settings, then go to Set Features Available in Rest Mode, now ensure that Stay Connected to the Internet is ticked and below that, Enable Turning on PS4 from Network is ticked.
Step 5: Tweak Remote Play Settings. Now, fire up the PS4 Remote Play application on your computer. This will open up the application, now before you hit Start, On the left corner of the application find the Settings option.
- You can now tweak the resolution settings and frames per second for your games. What’s suggested over here is that set resolution to max only when a good Internet connection speed is available, otherwise 720p is suitable with high Frames per second. With Frames, you can set to Standard or High where High gives you up to 60 FPS which is pretty good.
Step 6: Connecting the DualShock Controller. You can use a USB cable to plug-in DualShock 4 Controller to the computer. So, go ahead and plug your USB cable to the computer and the other end to the controller.
The more convenient way does not require a wire connection. Sony DualShock 4 USB Wireless Adapter. To connect the controller to your wireless adapter following are simple steps.
- Press & Hold the share & circular buttons on your Controller till the light bar starts flashing on the controller.
- Plug-in the USB adapter into your laptop and hold it in a pushing position for at least 4-5 seconds. This will connect your controller to the adapter.
Step 7: Move back to your laptop and you will see a Start button in the Sony Remote Play software. Press the Start button, the application will search for PS4 and pair with it, if this is your first time it will require you to sign in to your PlayStation Network account. Go ahead and do so.
Once you have followed the steps, you will be able to see your PlayStation screen on your computer. Everything will be controlled by your DualShock 4 controller. You can also use your trackpad, keyboard & PC mic. Everything is very seamless and lag-free.
Make sure to have a good router for both of these steps as they require your devices to be on the same network and good Internet speed.
